- Speaking to creative writing students at Pages on Kensington, Calgary. Aritha van Herk introduces.
- [00:06:00] Writing poetry again through the story of Rita K.
- “Hornbook #15”: question of identity through place – fallacy of the isolation of writers. Two sentence line format.
- “Winnipeg”: when writing poetry listening to the speech unit, and therefore the body writes the poem in a sense. Here he is intentionally writing way beyond the breath statement.
- “New”: Fascination with the Orpheus story. A quest for the new world. Calgary as a part of this dream or illusion.
- “Oviedo”: Three mound poems which Rita organizes her poems into – “The Battle River Mound,” “The Kyoto Mound,” and “The Oviedo Mound”. Question of ‘where does the poem reside?’.
- Crow: inspired by readings of South American magic realist texts
- Qs: What do you do when you aren’t feeling inspired to write?
- Process for writing – going over drafts repeatedly
- When did he know he wanted to be a writer? At 16, in an English class in Red Deer High School. His English teacher asked if he ever considered being a writer.
