His Chinese and Scots-Irish ethnic background and identity have a significant influence on his literary work. Wah completed an undergraduate degree in Literature and Music at the University of British Columbia, where he became a founding editor of the TISH newsletter in 1961, and has taught at Selkirk College, the David Thompson University Centre, and the University of Calgary.
