Dario Llinares, Neil Fox, Richard Berry) as an opportunity to think and engage in discussion about the emergence of podcasting as a field of critical study. Led by SpokenWeb podcast series director Hannah McGregor, the session opened with a presentation by one of the editors of the scholarly collection on Podcasting, Dario Llinares, in which he presented some of the main theses about podcasting presented in the book, and reflected on how the landscape of research around podcasting is rapidly developing. Brief position papers were then presented from respondents Stacey Copeland (SFU), Elena Razlogova (Concordia U), Kim Fox (American University in Cairo), Michael O’Driscoll (U Alberta) and Deanna Fong (Concordia U), which shared perspectives on podcasting as a field of scholarly research and practice. This session prompted participants to reflect on the notion of \"listening positionality,\" as described in Dylan Robinson's book Hungry Listening: Resonant Theory for Indigenous Sound Studies: the ways that our perception and, more specifically, faculties of audition are shaped by our social situation within the structures of race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, and cultural background. The collective listening in this session focused on two recordings: the first, a sound piece by Jordan Scott and Jason Starnes from the Lanterns at Guantanàmo project, which sequences ambient and environmental sound captured during Scott's 2015 tour of the Guantanàmo Bay Detention Camp in Cuba; the second, Fong's recorded response to that piece, commissioned for Robinson's recent project on listening positionality, in which Fong describes what she hears in the recording and consider her own orientation towards it as an auditor. Owing to the virtual nature of the event, all involved remained geographically separated. Acknowledging this as a unique opportunity to discuss all manner of approaches to everyday sonic environments, a workshop called “Noticing, Noting, and Notating Sounds” was organized to investigate different perspectives towards the task at hand. Led by artist and researcher Angus Tarnawsky, the initial workshop provided a series of daily prompts and suggestions for ways that each listener could share their experiences with the larger group.\n\nAs a result of the diversity of approaches that were subsequently shared on a daily basis, over the duration of symposium, many participants actively began to shift how they listened to, and engaged with their surrounding environment. What might an audiobook liberated from preconceived notions of the printed book sound like? Whereas most literary recordings seek to imitate print formats as faithfully as possible, this presentation examines a series of performances that take advantage of the audiobook’s affordances in order to go beyond merely replicating print. Drawing on source material ranging from musician memoirs to fiction by Charles Dickens and Stephen King, it considers what’s at stake when audio publishers experiment with soundtracks that go beyond the verbal description of sounds by using actual sounds.
