The society held an influential conference in Vancouver from June 30 to July 3, 1983; participants included Canadian women writers, editors, publishers, critics, printers, typesetters, academics, playwrights, librarians, distributors, booksellers, translators, and educational and cultural organizers. The conference featured presentations of papers, panel discussions, workshops and interviews relevant to such themes as: feminism, power and alternative structures doing it (i.e. developing work strategies), traditions and new directions. Following the conference, the West Coast Women and Word Society continued to fulfil their mandate by organizing poetry competitions, hosting readings and events, editing and compiling anthologies of women's writing, and running a mentorship program designed to connect young women writers with more established ones."],"collection_source_collection_id":["MsC 23"],"persistent_url":[""],"item_title":["Women and Words - \"Women Writers and the Short Story\" (workshop): Gail Scott at UBC on July 2,1983"],"item_title_source":["Conference Program"],"item_language":["English, French"],"item_production_context":["Documentary recording"],"item_identifiers":["[]"],"rights":["Copyright Not Evaluated (CNE)"],"creator_names":["Scott, Gail"],"creator_names_search":["Scott, Gail"],"creators":["[{\"url\":\"https://viaf.org/viaf/14804046/\",\"name\":\"Scott, Gail\",\"dates\":\"1945-\",\"notes\":\"\",\"nation\":[],\"role\":[\"Speaker\"]}]"],"contributors":["[]"],"Performance_Date":[1983],"material_description":["[{\"side\":\"\",\"image\":\"../Uploads/8815/MSC76-019a.jpg\",\"other\":\"\",\"extent\":\"1/8 inch\",\"AV_types\":\"Audio\",\"tape_brand\":\"\",\"generations\":\"\",\"Conservation\":\"Good\",\"equalization\":\"\",\"playback_mode\":\"\",\"playing_speed\":\"\",\"sound_quality\":\"Good\",\"recording_type\":\"Analogue\",\"storage_capacity\":\"\",\"physical_condition\":\"Good\",\"track_configuration\":\"\",\"material_designation\":\"Cassette\",\"physical_composition\":\"Magnetic Tape\",\"accompanying_material\":\"\",\"other_physical_description\":\"Clear tape box\"}]"],"material_designations":["Cassette"],"physical_compositions":["Magnetic Tape"],"recording_type":["Analogue"],"AV_type":["Audio"],"digital_description":["[{\"file_url\":\"https://digital.lib.sfu.ca/women-and-words-women-writers-and-short-story-workshop-gail-scott-ubc-july-21983-part-1\",\"file_path\":\"\",\"filename\":\"MSC23-19-SideA.mp3\",\"channel_field\":\"Stereo\",\"sample_rate\":\"44.1 kHz\",\"duration\":\"T00:46:57\",\"precision\":\"\",\"size\":\"51.2 MB\",\"bitrate\":\"32 bit\",\"encoding\":\"WAV for master files and .MP3 for online files\",\"contents\":\"\",\"notes\":\"\",\"title\":\"\",\"credit\":\"\",\"caption\":\"\",\"content_type\":\"Sound Recording\",\"featured\":\"\",\"public_access_url\":\"\"},{\"file_url\":\"https://digital.lib.sfu.ca/women-and-words-women-writers-and-short-story-workshop-gail-scott-ubc-july-21983-part-2\",\"file_path\":\"\",\"filename\":\"MSC23-19-SideB.mp3\",\"channel_field\":\"Stereo\",\"sample_rate\":\"44.1 kHz\",\"duration\":\"T00:47:04\",\"precision\":\"\",\"size\":\"51.0 MB\",\"bitrate\":\"32 bit\",\"encoding\":\"WAV for master files and .MP3 for online files\",\"contents\":\"\",\"notes\":\"\",\"title\":\"\",\"credit\":\"\",\"caption\":\"\",\"content_type\":\"Sound Recording\",\"featured\":\"\",\"public_access_url\":\"\"}]"],"Dates":["[{\"date\":\"1983-07-02\",\"type\":\"Performance Date\",\"notes\":\"Saturday at 9-10:30am\",\"source\":\"Conference Program\"}]"],"Location":["[{\"url\":\"https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/83433307\",\"venue\":\"Angus Building, University of British Columbia, Room A221\",\"notes\":\"\",\"address\":\"University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC\",\"latitude\":\"49.26503765\",\"longitude\":\"-123.25386541436339\"}]"],"Address":["University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC"],"Venue":["Angus Building, University of British Columbia, Room A221"],"City":["Vancouver, British Columbia"],"Note":["[{\"note\":\"Side A sound quality is fine; Side B sound quality is poor.\",\"type\":\"General\"}]"],"Related_works":["[]"],"_version_":1853670556045410305,"timestamp":"2026-01-07T15:00:00.367Z","score":4.2402368},{"id":"6992","cataloger_name":["Mozhgan,Nourafkan"],"partnerInstitution":["Simon Fraser University"],"collection_source_collection":["Fred Wah Fonds"],"source_collection_label":["Fred Wah Fonds"],"collection_contributing_unit":["SFU Library"],"source_collection_uri":[""],"collection_image_url":[""],"collection_source_collection_description":["The Fred Wah fonds collects materials from Vancouver-based poet Fred Wah, who was appointed as Canadau2019s fifth Parliamentary Poet Laureate in 2011 and has published 25 books between 1965 and 2016.
