She was born in Ireland in 1957, grew up in Trinidad, and has lived in Canada since the early 1980s. Mootoo studied fine arts at the University of Western Ontario where she began to paint and produce video works. She earned a master of fine arts equivalent at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver in 1982. Mootoo's collection of short stories Out on Main Street was published in 1993. This was followed in 1996 by her first novel, Cereus Blooms at Night, which was published in fourteen countries and was a finalist for the Giller Prize, the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, and the Chapters/Books in Canada First Novel Award. In 2001, Mootoo published a collection of poetry, The Predicament of Or. Her second novel, He Drown She in the Sea, was published in May 2005. Mootoo has been a writer in residence at the University of Alberta, at Mills College in Oakland, California, and at the Varuna Writers Residency program in Australia. She has taught writing at the University of Alberta, Capilano College in North Vancouver, the BC Festival of the Arts, and the BC Arts Council. Her visual art and video productions have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Queens Museum, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Venice Biennale.\n\nThe fonds reflects Mootoo's work as a writer and artist. It contains printed typescripts of published works with drafts and related working papers, published reviews, drafts of unpublished works, lecture notes, professional correspondence, notebooks and sketchbooks, video productions in VHS format, audio materials and works of visual art.\n\nThe audio materials in this collection consist of a reading of Mootoo's story, \"All in a Day,\" as well as radio interviews and panels on Vancouver Coop Radio, Radio Centre-Ville in Montreal, and CBC Radio's Writers and Company."],"collection_source_collection_id":["MsC 76"],"persistent_url":[""],"item_title":["Our Sister's Place: Shani Mootoo Interview with Laura Yaros at Radio Centre-Ville on November 20, 1993"],"item_title_source":["cassette and j-card"],"item_language":["English"],"item_production_context":["Broadcast"],"item_series_title":["Unarchiving the Margins Collection"],"item_series_description":["Historically, literary studies and literary-archival work has focused on the stories of white, male writers. Wah was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan in 1939 and grew up in the West Kootenay region. His Chinese and Scots-Irish ethnic background and identity have a significant influence on his literary work. Wah completed an undergraduate degree in Literature and Music at the University of British Columbia, where he became a founding editor of the TISH newsletter in 1961, and has taught at Selkirk College, the David Thompson University Centre, and the University of Calgary. Born in Seattle attended the University of California, Berkeley on the G.I. Bill. There he met Ellen King; they married in 1951. In 1956, the Tallmans accepted teaching jobs in the English department at the University of British Columbia, where they helped Earle Birney and Roy Daniells to organize the creative writing department. In 1963, they hosted a poetry conference attended by Denise Levertov, Charles Olson, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Duncan, Margaret Avison, and Philip Whalen. The Tallman home itself also served as a poetry enclave of sorts. It was there that Jack Spicer gave some of his now legendary lectures. Two years later, they held another poetry conference in Berkeley, California. Sometimes criticized by Canadian literary nationalists for turning the Vancouver poetry circle into a California branch plant, Tallman embraced the Black Mountain school approach to poetry, and also was influenced from the Beats and other New American Poets.
